The Chapel of the Holy Trinity at Marathon Lake was — and remains — a beautiful little chapel overlooking the waters of Marathon Lake. It is a post-Byzantine monument, a remnant of the monastery that once stood on the site, and belongs to the Parish of Agios Stefanos, under the Holy Metropolis of Kifissia, Marousi & Oropos.
In Christianity, the Holy Trinity refers to the three Persons of God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are inseparable and consubstantial in their divinity, sharing the same divine nature and power.
Access to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity is via a difficult dirt road. Despite this, the chapel has always attracted many visitors throughout the year, who come to light a candle, pray, and enjoy the beautiful views over Marathon Lake.
The wildfire that started in Varympompi and Tatoi on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, and eventually reached Marathon Lake completely destroyed the natural landscape surrounding the Chapel of the Holy Trinity.
The chapel itself was saved thanks to the intervention of volunteer firefighting teams, including the Rodopoli Volunteer Forest Firefighting and Rescue Forces.
The area had also been affected by wildfires in 2009, but back then, part of the forest managed to survive. This time, however, the destruction of the surrounding landscape was extensive.
Let us hope that the area will be spared from further wildfires in the years to come, giving nature the time it needs to work its magic and allowing the landscape around the chapel to recover and flourish once again.
