Tasting at “Argentina” Restaurant | Lake Marathon (Vothonas)

In the semi-mountainous settlement of Vothonas, also known as Kalentzi, near the enchanting Lake Marathon, nestles the restaurant “Argentina.” With a history spanning over two decades, this restaurant has become a true gastronomic destination, inspired by the authentic flavors of Argentina. The family, who once emigrated to Latin America, returned bringing back their culinary memories, traditional recipes, and a deep love for quality cuisine.
The space exudes a sense of warmth and hospitality, blending traditional touches with Argentine influences. The cobblestone outdoor area, featuring an impressive open grill, offers an authentic experience, allowing guests to enjoy the grilling process. Inside, the décor with wooden elements and nostalgic references to Argentina creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The staff, always polite and attentive, ensures that every guest feels comfortable and warmly welcomed.
Our culinary experience began with the restaurant’s signature salad. A harmonious combination of crisp lollo lettuce, juicy cherry tomatoes, fresh onion, crunchy croutons, sweet dried figs, fine cured ham, rich graviera cheese, and aromatic balsamic. Each bite achieved a perfect balance between sweetness and saltiness, creating a truly delightful ensemble.
Next, we tried the authentic Argentine empanadas. Filled with juicy chicken, aromatic minced meat, or melted cheese, they stood out for the perfect balance between the crispy pastry and the flavorful filling. A special detail that impressed us was the restaurant’s logo, carefully engraved on the crust of each empanada.
The next dish offered us a unique contrast of flavors. Feta cheese, wrapped in thin and crispy phyllo pastry, was paired with honey, black sesame, and white sesame. The result was a delightful interplay of sweet and salty.
The highlight of the meal came with the exceptional veal — grilled to perfection (medium). Served on a wooden board, each bite was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The dish was accompanied by a fine Argentine red wine, Malbec, which beautifully enhanced the rich aromas of the meat.
The sweet finale of the meal left the best impression. The cheesecake won us over with its creamy texture and balanced sweetness, while the chocolate brownie, served with vanilla ice cream and velvety caramel syrup, offered an utterly delightful experience. Finally, the lemon sorbet, with its cool and refreshing flavor, provided a touch of freshness that perfectly completed the meal.
The tavern “Argentina” is a distinctive destination that combines exceptional food quality, genuine hospitality, and an atmosphere that transports you. The family’s dedication to Argentine traditions and flavors makes this experience truly unique, while the approachable sophistication of the dishes makes it an ideal choice for every lover of fine cuisine. One visit is enough to win you over and leave you with unforgettable gastronomic memories.
